WHO IS MATT ONYSHKO?
Matthew is a City of Pittsburgh Fire Fighter who is literally in the fight of his life. In 2008, when he was only 27 years old, Matt developed symptoms that were later diagnosed as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative motor neuron disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The degeneration of the motor neurons eventually lead to their death and consequently the inability of the brain to initiate and control motor functions such as walking, talking, eating, and breathing. With these motor functions impaired, patients generally become totally paralyzed. The average life expectancy for an ALS patient upon diagnosis is between 3-5 years.
Despite Matt’s diagnosis, his wife, Jessica, said he has remained positive and continues to challenge himself. He has gone sky diving and he’s found a handicap extreme sports group. This past winter he went skiing and plans on water skiing this summer. Jessica, with the help of their families, cares for Matt and their daughters, Kendall, 3, and McKenna, 1, at home, full time.
As the disease changes, Matt has had to modify his activities. He has difficulty walking, needs assistance climbing stairs and recently received a feeding tube as eating has become difficult. Their home, situated on the North side of Pittsburgh, no longer accommodates the demands of the disease and they are in need of help to fund for a handicap accessible bedroom, bathroom, and vehicle.
WHO ARE WE?
We are a group of City of Pittsburgh Firefighter instructors and Crossfit coaches who research, plan, execute, maintain and document our fire recruit's physical fitness program. While conducting PT one day a few of us were talking about different fitness events used for various good causes and the idea of a Crossfit workout of Matt was born.
Our goal is to get everyone who reads this to spread the word, come out, donate/ work out hard and heighten awareness to ALS and fitness in general. At the end of the day we hope to present a substantial donation to help out Matt and his family.
